World Sight Day 2025 – 9th October
World Sight Day at SCEH was marked by a huge number of events spanning their network of vision centres and hospitals. Health talks, free eye screenings and disease awareness drives took place, creating a ripple in the global movement to prevent avoidable blindness.
I spent the day in the paediatric department. Small children started turning up, a little cautious and shy at first. I had set up a painting area for these artists with an array of materials waiting to be explored. Parents looked on some with reservations in their eyes. But, once a few children sat and started painting, it wasn’t long before all the children and some parents were getting involved.
Once again, it was inspiring to observe that you didn’t have to give these children instruction, and after a while their confidence became noticeable. Despite any sight limitations, their handling skills improved.
